    Description

New York lawyer and politician Roscoe Conkling (1829-1888) penned this February 25, 1884 letter
in which he writes to a Mr. Hornblower about the Gramme case. He writes, “I need some papers I think. You know I have not even petition. Will you please send all by bearer, with any indication you may give me of what you would have me do.”
Conkling was the leader of the Stalwart faction of the Republican Party, a faction that opposed Rutherford B. Hayes’s civil service reform. He served as a member of the House of Representatives from 1859 to 1863 and again from 1865 to 1867 and as a U.S. Senator from 1867 to 1881. Conkling is also the last person to decline the position of U.S. Supreme Court justice after having already been confirmed.
Written on an 8” x 5 ¼” sheet of Roscoe’s personal “Law Office of Roscoe Conkling, No. 2 Wall Street” imprinted stationery.
